Cancun is now prepare for a Hurricane Milton disaster as the category 4 storm poses an ‘extremely serious threat’ to the area.

As Hurricane Milton moves through the Gulf of Mexico, it poses a significant threat to Florida’s coast, with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) actively tracking the storm’s development and trajectory.

Milton rapidly strengthened on Monday, escalating to a powerful Category 5 hurricane with winds exceeding 180 mph.

However, by late Monday, wind speeds began to decline, and by early Tuesday, Milton was classified as a Category 4 storm, with winds recorded at 155 mph, just shy of Category 5 status.

The NHC warns that Milton remains a “serious threat” to Florida, emphasizing that residents have until the end of Tuesday to prepare.

Forecasters predict that Milton will maintain its strength and increase in size before it makes landfall.

Current forecasts indicate that Milton will likely hit Florida’s west coast on Wednesday night, albeit with slightly reduced intensity. While models may shift over the coming days, direct impacts in the Tampa area are anticipated.

Milton is expected to move just north of the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday and approach Florida by Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The NHC urges residents to evacuate if instructed by local authorities, as landfall is projected to occur Wednesday night as a “dangerous hurricane.”

At present, Milton is located about 520 miles southwest of Tampa, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph and a minimum central pressure of 923 mb, moving east-northeast at 8 mph.

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for:

  • The west coast of Florida from Flamingo to the Suwannee River, including Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay

  • Sebastian Inlet to the Volusia/Brevard County line
  • The St. Mary’s River to Edisto Beach

A Hurricane Watch is active for:

  • Rio Lagartos to Cabo Catoche
  • Dry Tortugas
  • Lake Okeechobee
  • Florida’s west coast from Chokoloskee to south of Bonita Beach

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • Rio Lagartos to Cancun
  • All of the Florida Keys, including Dry Tortugas and Florida Bay
  • Lake Okeechobee
  • Various areas along Florida’s east and west coasts

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:

  • The coast of Georgia and South Carolina from north of the St. Marys River to South Santee River
  • The extreme northwestern Bahamas, including Grand Bahama Island and the Abacos

The NHC highlights that the primary hazards from Hurricane Milton include storm surge, heavy rainfall, and high winds.

Storm surge is expected to significantly elevate water levels and produce destructive waves, while rainfall could lead to up to 15 inches in some regions, heightening the risk of flash flooding and river flooding.

Storm surge predictions include:

  • Anclote River to Englewood: 10-15 ft
  • Tampa Bay: 10-15 ft
  • Englewood to Bonita Beach: 6-10 ft
  • Charlotte Harbor: 6-10 ft
  • Other areas will see varying levels of surge.

All residents in Florida should prepare for sustained winds and hurricane-strength gusts, particularly in Central Florida, where winds could exceed 100 mph in some locations.
