Officials now update on body found near cliffside in Southern California which has sparked an ongoing investigation.
Law enforcement officials have released new information regarding the discovery of a body on a beach in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Discovery Details
The body was discovered on Saturday afternoon around 1:00 p.m. by a hiker near Pelican Cove, specifically close to Dina’s Viewpoint along Palos Verdes Drive South.
According to preliminary reports, the hiker was exploring the area when she spotted what appeared to be a body at the base of a cliff roughly 50 to 60 feet above the sea floor.
Lt. Steve DeJong of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed at a press conference on Sunday that the hiker promptly contacted authorities.
“While [the hiker] was admiring the surroundings, she looked down and noticed what she thought was a body down at the base of the cliff,” Lt. DeJong said.
“The body was about 50 to 60 feet above the sea floor, and it appears based on our limited expertise with identifying decaying bodies, that it’s probably been there for a few months…it’s in a severe state of decay.”
Deputies, accompanied by the L.A. County Fire Department, responded to the scene and confirmed the presence of a human body.
First responders pronounced the individual dead at the location.
Condition of the Body
Lt. DeJong noted that based on preliminary observations, the body appeared to have been there for several months, showing significant signs of decay.
Investigators from the L.A. County Homicide Unit are currently working to determine the cause of death, exploring whether it was the result of an accident, such as a slip and fall, or if foul play was involved.
However, further details regarding the investigation remain undisclosed.
Recent Related Incidents
This grim discovery comes on the heels of another unsettling find just days earlier, where two human legs were located on the Bluff Cove Trail, approximately four and a half miles from where the body was found.
This incident occurred shortly after the disappearance of two boaters whose vessel had been located less than two miles from Cabrillo Beach.
Despite the proximity of these incidents, Lt. DeJong stated that there is currently no connection between the discovered body and the missing boaters.
Investigators found no direct evidence linking the remains to the boaters, although they are keeping all possibilities open.
The Coast Guard had suspended its search for the two missing men, both in their 50s, after failing to find any signs of distress.
Search efforts, which included aerial and maritime methods, showed no evidence that the individuals could still be alive.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials remain committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding these recent discoveries.
The community is urged to stay informed as more information becomes available.
